NOTE: I don’t normally include covers by children of songs dealing with adult issues like those covered in this song but this performance is so exceptional and it has been handled in a manner that allays some of my concerns so that I am including it.
Lollipops Band is a Russian children's vocal group. It is made up of children who are members of the Magic Castle Talent Academy in Moscow. Most of the participants are not only fluent in English and Russian but also speak other languages as well and have taken part in singing and talent competitions in Russia, most notably regular members Sonia Philippova and Mariam Jalagonia competing in the 2018 New Wave Junior, and they like to dance as well as sing in their videos.
Love on the Brain was originally released by Rihanna on her 2016 album Anti and as a single. It is a love song about a disfunctional relationship where the singer is being abused but is still committed to the relationship. This is a solo performance from regular Lollipops Band member, Alisa Trifonova. She takes a more laid back treatment of the song, focusing more on the love aspects of the song, she also changes the lyrics, omitting the parts that are least appropriate for someone of her age. Alisa expertly uses the soulful aspects of her voice to bring out the beauty of the melody and inserts her whole personality to make the song her own and to take the song a further step away from its violent origins.
WARNING: This song contains descriptions of domestic violence and is not usually considered suitable for children.
