Drum Interpretations #3: Steve Reich “Clapping Music” is Rich’s arrangement for drum kit of Clapping Music That was written by Steve Reich in 1972. Clapping Music was originally written for 2 performers who clap a simple 12 beat rhythm, 1 performer claps the rhythm repeatedly during the whole performance while the 2nd performer shifts the rhythm by 1 beat after every 8 or 12 repetitions until both performers are back in unison. For this interpretation Rich has taken the pattern and performed it on a drum kit where a single performer completes both patterns repeated on different drums, with new patterns added for the feet, performing the while piece twice with the second cycle performed at double speed with a variation on the feet rhythms. This produces a more interesting and complex rhythmic exploration than the original and a surprisingly pleasant listening experience.
