Maybe This Time was originally recorded by Liza Minnelli on her 1984 album Liza! Liza! but didn’t become a standard until it was included in Liza‘s 1972 movie Cabaret. It is about having been unlucky in love but still holding hope that this time things will work out. In this wonderful rendition Brooke starts out tentatively, as though she doesn’t really believe that anything will be different, but, as the song continues, her confidence increases until at the end, from just the power of her voice, she turns the song into a bigger production number than they could manage in the major Hollywood movie version. And the Hollywood version doesn’t have Brooke‘s intense eyes that are as expressive as her voice and both perfectly communicate the complex emotions of the song.
