Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight was originally released by The Beatles on their 1969 album Abbey Road. Golden Slumbers is a lullaby, based on a 17th Century poem, and Carry That Weight is about continuing on while under pressure. This is a solo performance given by Sonia Philippova at the New Wave Junior 2018 competition. Sonia starts the song quite mildly, and then really belts it out from the Carry That Weight part with the absolute highlight being when Sonia sings lead over the counterpoint of the backing vocals which could only be improved by a better sound mix. She really milks the audience, and even the judges are rocking along with her. The video is from the first day of performances at New Wave Junior and begins with a short introduction that includes a few clips where Sonia‘s personality overflows onto the screen. During the performance her mother can be seen among her special supporters, and we don’t really need the caption for us to know which of the 3 is mama.
If you are wondering why they refer to her as Sofia in the clip and she is here referred to as Sonia, it is because in Russian her name is Софья [Sof’ya] but in English she prefers to be called Sonia because most English speakers don’t pronounce her name correctly and Sonia is much closer.
