Banting’s Imparted Years is based on the tune of Barrett’s Privateers which was originally released by Stan Rogers on his 1976 album Fogarty’s Cove. It tells the story of Leonard Thompson, who was the first diabetic to receive an injection of insulin to relieve the symptoms of the then always fatal disease, and the research of Dr. Frederick Banting, Charles Best, Bertram Collip, and Professor John Macleod that lead up to the cure. Thompson died 13 years later from pneumonia, aged 27 years, Banting and Macleod were given the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1923, Bunting shared his award money with Best and Macleod shared his with Collip. The song is a sea shanty with a single voice during the verses and a 5 part chorus during the refrain lines.
