Time for some comedy. Due to the recent death of Rik Mayall this week’s comedy is from Rik, with the rest of The Young Ones cast and Cliff Richard.
The Young Ones was a British TV show that was originally shown in the 1980s. The show was a side project of some of the members of The Comic Strip (recently featured as Bad News, another Comic Strip side project). It was the story of 4 University students sharing a house and featured anarchic, slapstick style comedy packaged together as a loose storyline with frequent non-sequitur plot twists. The main characters were: anarchist Rick (Rik Mayall); punk Vyvyan (Adrian Edmondson); hippy Neil (Nigel Planer); and Mike (Christopher Ryan). Comic Strip stalwart Peter Richardson was originally intended to play Mike but he was replaced by actor Ryan after clashing with 1 of the producers.
Living Doll was originally recorded by Cliff Richard in 1959 and was his 1st Number 1 single and his first US hit. This version of the song was recorded in 1986 with Cliff and the The Young Ones to raise money for the charity Comic Relief. They also performed the song live at one of the Comic Relief concerts (you can watch the live performance here). This version was more successful than the original in most places that it was released.
You can buy this version of Living Doll on iTunes.
